Listen, of course there were things about Luke that were less than desirable; but I love him and I'm not talking badly about him. HAHA! I also love Jess, but man; they didn't give his character a shot!
I'm going to try to go in Chronological order, but we'll see how this goes.
I was telling Zach that I have seen this show so many times though that I could tell you why everyone sucks so I thought... Blog time! and decided to start with Lorelai and Rory's boyfriends.
!!!!!! **This goes without saying, but there are some huge spoilers if you haven't see the show!!!!!**
Let's start off with the reason that we have the character Rory in the first place. Rory's dad. Lorelai's "first" boyfriend. So like many old school relationships, when Lorelai gets pregnant, Chris proposes. When Lorelai is like "Hey man we're 16" he basically peaces out. You see one scene that he was there at the hospital, but then he goes to school and fails his way through alot of his adulthood with business ventures that go awry. He then randomly shows back up into their lives but up until Rory was 16, she has only ever gotten phone calls from the guy. He doesn't even see their house for the first time until then either. He confesses his sort of love to Lorelai and leaves. Then we don't hear from him again for a long time!!!!
...Ok I am going to need to summarize because there are just wayyyyy to many details that make him crappy.
He is inconsistent at best! He drunkenly tells Lorelai, while she is in a relationship, that they belong together and everyone knows it; causing the first break up between her and Luke. He is always trying to make a relationship with Lorelai and then when he finally does, he is basically just taking advantage of the fact that she was completely heartbroken because she split up with the absolute love of her life AND THEN wants to say that he can't trust her and GHOSTS for DAYS!
A solid 0 out of 10. Don't recommend. HAHA
Oh man. I want to love him. He is Rory's first boyfriend. He does some sweet things. He's Jared Padalecki. I really wanted to like him. And when you first watch it, you almost do. But like I said, I've seen it a thousand times and I can see red flags from the beginning now.
He makes Rory feel like she owes him constantly. He always says stuff that makes it seem like Rory is in his debt. Like I get the playful "Fine, but you owe me" stuff but this is like he is actually going to make her owe him.
When they break up at 3 months because she wouldn't say that she loved him, I really think that we should have just chalked it up and been done with it. He was clearly in a different place in their relationship than she was, which is kinda evident when he goes and gets married at 18. Like this guy was lightyears ahead of her. (sidetone: I really liked in the year in the life the reboot that he said that he was married to Gen. because that's Jared's wife's name.) Saying that you love someone isn't just flippant with some people. She came from a broken home and her mom didn't really openly date around her. So outside of her mom, she doesn't have a grasp of boy girl love. It had only been 3 months. I know that forever as a teen, but an intellectual like Rory would have needed more time.
I could list a million more things, but I am going to try to bullet point now. Not my strong suit.
Overall: He's cute. He's her first boyfriend. Unfortunately her first -ya know- seeing as she was the other woman.
Thank you. Next.
I could literally not hate this guy more. He is just ew. I am going to bullet point him so I can stop talking about him.
I just don't like him at all and I am glad they never got married.
Honestly, this dude sucked because he basically just ghosted.
Lorelai met this guy at a conference that her and Sookie went to where Sookie ran into this guy that she used to know. He was friends with Sookies friend.
They go on a handful of dates and then he just like meh. Gone.
At one point you hear Lorelai say something along the lines of, 'Things with Alex are more spotty than ever'. And that was it.
Jason.... man. I know I hated Max the most, but Jason was almost equally as bad.
He was such a weirdo. The actor that played him gave weirdo in real life vibes.
Jason and Lorelai met when they were younger at camp. He works with her father at the insurance firm in which Richard retires. Richard soon realizes that he hates retirement and ends up starting his own company and Jason begs to work with him.
So coming in hot, the first that happens is Jason makes Emily feel obsolete. There is no need for a wife throw a launch party (that has already been fully planned) because they can just be lewd in Atlantic City with potential investors instead. He didn't realize that the party was planned so it wasn't INTENTIONAL, but this is how were being introduced to a character. It doesn't show much promise. Lorelai and Jason literally only start dating because Lorelai thinks that it would make her mother mad.
Jason likes that he has money and does things to show off his wealth and that leaves me with that "Ew" feeling. He brings Lorelai to this awesome restaurant with a fun atmosphere to just rent out a quiet private room because it had a long waiting list but he could get them in.
In his apartment, he asks Lorelai to sleep in his guest room. His reasoning is that he is a very light sleeper, but like so am I dude. Take some Zzzquil and power through for the snuggles. Anyone that is in a new relationship, just no. I'd 1000% have left and Lorelai stays because of the massive movie collection which he brags about all the cool amenities he has for this guest room; again pointing to how much money he makes.
Again my summary skills are super subpar. Anyway... Things go south when Jason is going to sue Lorelei's father over some shady business dealings and she breaks up with him. He doesn't take that as a 'bye' though and shows up to her newly opened business and makes a nuisance of himself; almost wrecking things between her and Luke who just were becoming "something".
Like I started off saying, I hate to even say anything bad about him. He was fan favorite that they tanked in the show to give him his own show and then it never happened.
So the main reason that he sucked is because he went after Rory when he knew she had a boyfriend. He's not fully to blame because if she had proper boundaries in her relationship in the first place then a new guy in town wouldn't have meant the end of her relationship. BUT, it was scummy to keep going after her; especially if he was going to be all commitment issue-y once they got together.
He never wanted to plan dates and was all "I'll see you when I see you" kind of a boyfriend. Which, you don't want clingy, but this is the polar opposite. Also no bueno.
Because of how they got together, there was always trust issues for them. He wasn't always telling her the truth either. He was skipping school and she was friends with Dean.
I think they could have gotten over their issues and been a great couple; BUT his dad comes to town combined with Luke throwing him out and he literally Ghosts her and calls and hangs up over and over again until SHE ends things though a phone call where doesn't even say a word.
The spinoff that he was getting was going to follow his character living on the west coast with his dad and girlfriend and doing things out there. That's why the character was left on the west coast. There was one episode of the show that solely followed him around in California.
It was nice to see his character growth through the series though. Once the show wasn't picked up at one point he came back and told Rory he loved her. But the show took her in the direction of a married Dean at that time. Again he came back after her had written a book and snaps Rory out of her weirdo hiatus from Yale. Then you see him open a book shop in Philly with 3 friends. In the revival he is even successful and helps Rory on her path to write a book about her life.

I am not even remotely team Logan.
There was someone that wasn't mentioned in this list because he never made it to boyfriend status; but in the very beginning there was this character named Tristan. Rory hates Tristan. He comes from money, is rude, gets into trouble when he is bored.... and then Logan comes around and is all those things and Rory loves him! It really didn't make any sense.
Logan thinks that he is better than everyone because he has money. He treats people, including Rory's friend like he is beneath him because he once bartended one of Logan's events; and when called out on it, Logan just basically explains why the friend is in fact beneath him. Yuck!
He had girls crawling all over him all the time, again another boyfriend of Rory's that was noncommittal in the beginning. His family didn't like that Rory, while a Gilmore, didn't come from the kind of money they came from and was mean to her and instead of saying something to his family in her defense just told her to brush it off because he didn't like them either.
She has a break down and suggests they steal a yacht and instead of trying to talk her out of it he steals it with her and they both go to jail.
He cheats on her because he thought they were broken up but they had never definitively said that they were; they simply had a fight and he never communicated either way. So fight then ghost.
He proposes to her at her pre graduation party at her grandparents house in front of a billion people that she doesn't know and then when she wants to take time to answer he finds it weird but allows her the space. What I don't understand is how that this can be a complete shock to her. I am married and we talked about getting married for a while. I feel like a proposal is never that much of a surprise. Just more a lack of communication argument.
There are just so many things that I don't even know that I could do a bullet point. Just, he sucked. AND THEN in the revival he is cheating on his girlfriend with Rory and then he gets engaged to her(the girlfriend) and just ew.
This guy is just so ew that I can't even.
The last one on our list didn't even get a last name.
This guy didn't really suck, Rory was just awful to him.
The reason that he 'sucks' is because he lets her. He is just a push over that lets Rory do whatever to him and is just there. She is cheating on him with Logan for what seems like possibly their entire relationship.
He just needs to be in a relationship so he is in one basically.
So he doesn't so much suck as just doesn't matter.
Let me know what you think about all the boyfriends!
